The Registration Process
If you would like to access PKC from your Internet connection at home, you will need to register for a User ID and Password. You will also need to be registered if you'd like to take any of our online Continuing Medical Education courses.
To register, fill out our one-page online registration form. You will need a valid Kaiser Permanente email address to register. You will also be asked to create a unique User ID and Password that you will use to log into the site.
PKC will attempt to match your name and email address against the national email database (for more information, see the next section). If your email address is recognized, you will be permitted to enter the site immediately. If not, your information will be validated within 48 hours.
PKC is able to recognize most but not all Kaiser email addresses. If you do not gain immediate access, please wait 48 hours and try to log on with the User ID and Password you submitted with the registration form. If you still do not gain access, call 510-271-6426.

Internal Access vs. External Access
Kaiser employees are currently able to access PKC from their office without logging in or being registered. To access PKC outside of the office, users are required to enter their User ID and Password. Registration will also be necessary for access to CME Courses. To register, fill out our one-page online registration form.
The Permanente Knowledge Connection will be able to determine whether a user is on an internal computer or coming in from outside of the firewall. Here are the features that will be available or restricted depending on how you access PKC:
Internal Access
- Does not require a User ID
- Access to all content except CME courses
- Accessible via NRAS dialup
External Access
- Requires registration for a User ID and Password
- Accessible from home via your Internet dialup account
- Provides access to most content, including Ovid, MDConsult, and CMEs
- Does not provide access to Intranet content (Regional Intranets, Clinical Libraries, etc.)

Continuing Medical Education
PKC currently offers free online CME courses in Asthma, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Coronary Artery Disease Secondary Prevention (CAD), and Diabetes. By the end of the year, a Depression CME will be available.

Ovid, MDConsult, and Other Outside Websites
PKC provides links to several non-Kaiser websites. PKC pays the subscription costs for national KP employee access to Ovid and MDConsult. Ovid provides the ability to search hundreds of journals and obtain full text articles from about 100 journals. MDConsult has comprehensive textbooks and up-to-date medical news.
PKC also links to other KP-licensed resources such as Micromedex and non-KP sites that have been recommended and reviewed by Permanente physicians.
