Jill joined the Care Management Institute in August of 1999. Prior to joining CMI she traveled as a national consultant for a non-profit organization based in Memphis, Tennessee, where she implemented the organization's national policies and guidelines across their regions. Jill has also worked in an allergy and asthma medical group and conducted research for both a pharmaceutical company and The University of Arizona's College of Pharmacy. She received her BS in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Arizona and has always been drawn to the medical field and more specifically, disease management.

Prior to joining the Care Management Institute in 1998, Leslee was project manager for a number of Northern California operations improvement initiatives as a consultant for The Permanente Medical Group Operations Support Service. Before joining Operations Support Service, she served as assistant medical group administrator and assistant manger for laboratory operations at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa. She received her MBA from San Francisco State University, graduating with highest honors.

Bill joined the Care Management in August 2000.Prior to joining CMI he was Director of Operations Development for The Permanente Medical Group. Bill is a board certified endocrinologist and has been in practice with TPMG since 1979. He received his medical degree from Washington University.

Kristene joined CMI in October 2000 after earning a Master of Science degree from the Harvard School of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health. While there, her work focused on the field of social epidemiology - social networks and fertility; how ethnicity and immigration status affect health; family violence; and child and adolescent mental health. Previously, Kristene worked in San Francisco's early childhood policy world, conducted research in dermatology at UCSF, and was an activist and educator at Planned Parenthood. She received a BA in Neuroscience from Oberlin College.

Prior to joining the Care Management Institute in April 1999, Colleen performed research for several consulting companies, focusing on health care projects. During that time, she developed and designed marketing materials, evaluated validation protocols and performed competitive analyses. Colleen's professional interests are in preventive medicine and public health. She received her BA from Wellesley College.

Rebecca joined the Care Management Institute in February 2000. Prior to joining CMI she was an Administrative Assistant with Bank of America's Real Estate Group in San Francisco. Rebecca is a Kaiser Permanente alumnus having worked for Permanente Interregional Consultants (the predecessor to Permanente Federation) from 1989 to 1997. She began her career working for a law firm then went to work for the United States Department of Agriculture providing secretarial support to research scientists.

Marianne A. Dequina joined the Care Management Institute in November 2000. During the five years prior to joining CMI, Marianne was employed by GE Capital, where she served 2 years on the Diversity Council. Marianne has been pursuing her career goal to work in the field of child psychology and contribute to the well being of children. In preparation for her career, she participated in the GE Pen Pal program, which facilitated the interaction between GE employees and students in the 3rd and 4th grades. In addition, she recently served as a Child Life Volunteer for the Children's Hospital in Oakland. Marianne currently holds an associate's degree in Social Science, and is only a few classes away from receiving her bachelor's degree in Child Psychology from the Golden Gate University of San Francisco.

Suzy has worked for Kaiser Permanente since July 1996 and for the Care Management Institute since October 1999. Prior to joining CMI, Suzy worked in the California division as an administrative specialist with medicare and planning & analysis, and as a staff specialist with sales and marketing. She has also worked for national product development as a technical services coordinator. Suzy holds a BA in cinema studies.

Jan joined CMI in March 2000. She previously was the Best Practices Coordinator in the Northwest Region, supporting the identification and transfer of successful OB/GYN practices among regions. She participated in preparations for NCQA, HEDIS, and Vohs Award nominations. She worked with clinicians to design clinical studies and develop specialty care quality measures. She project led a KPNW collaboration with a large employer group to implement a health risk appraisal program. Prior to joining KPNW in 1993, Jan was instrumental in developing the utilization review and medical quality assurance programs at a university teaching hospital. She has been responsible for physician training and implementation of a hospital-based order-entry computer system. Her clinical background is acute medical oncology. A graduate of Oregon Health Sciences University, she is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the national nursing honor society, and maintains Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) certification.

Ken joined CMI in 1999. He came from KP Southern California where he served as a mathematical and statistical analyst in the Biomathematical Unit for three years. Prior to KP, Ken served as Project Manager on the Worldwide Cloud Prediction Model at Pacific Sierra Research Corporation. Ken served as a faculty member at the Coastal Studies Institute at Louisiana State University, and he conducted post-doctoral research at the University of Southern California. Ken holds a Ph.D. in earth and space physics at from the University of California, Los Angeles, and BS and MS degrees in physics and meteorology from Colorado State University. His professional interests include the development of prognostic models, based on explicit physiological models, to predict the course of disease, diagnosis, and the expected outcome of treatment.

Julia brings to Kaiser Permanente a diverse background in social services and biological research. Prior to joining the Care Management Institute in August of 2000, Julia worked as a Vocational Specialist with Learning Disabled high school students in the San Francisco Unified School District. In 1996, Julia received her Master of Science in Animal Science/Cell Biology. Her graduate studies focused on the proteins involved in binding gametes during mammalian fertilization. As an undergraduate at the University of Rhode Island, Julia assisted in several marine biological research projects while working on her Bachelor of Science in Zoology.

Kate joined the Care Management Institute in September 2000, after receiving a Master of Public Policy degree from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. Kate's graduate studies focused on qualitative and quantitative methods behind the analysis and development of sound social policy, with a specific focus on health care. Before grad school, Kate worked in Boston, MA as a sales representative for a major pharmaceutical company and as a content provider for a multimedia software developer. She attended Colgate University for her undergraduate studies, where she majored in History and minored in Political Science.

Trina joined the Care Management Institute in July of 1998. Prior to joining CMI, she worked as a senior project manager at the Pacific Business Group on Health (PBGH), where she conducted research that assessed the quality of care delivered at the medical group level. Prior to moving to the US, she lectured on and ran the MA in Health Psychology Program at University College, Cork, Ireland. In addition, she was responsible for implementing intervention programs for cardiac patients. She received her BA in applied psychology and her PhD in health psychology from University College, Cork, Ireland.

Brad joined the Care Management Institute in October, 2000. Prior to joining CMI, he held the role of National Project Manager in KP IT, leading the Kaiser Convergent Medical Terminology (CMT) project. Prior to CMT he spent close to 10 years in KP Northwest IT as an Application Group Manager for Clinical Systems including the implementation of the award-winning EpicCare computerized medical record system.

Merlie began working for Kaiser Permanente in 1988 in the Human Resources department. In 1989 she transferred to Permanente Interregional Consultants as a senior secretary/data technician, and in 1996 she became part of the Care Management Institute. Prior to her career at Kaiser, Merlie worked in the Nursing department at the University of New Mexico. In addition, she lived in Iran for 7 years and held administrative roles at a major pharmaceutical company and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Norma brings fourteen years of administrative support experience to Kaiser Permanente. Before joining the Care Management Institute, Norma was a Team Coordinator at the California Medical Review, Inc. in San Francisco. There she supported the total quality manager, the Legal Counsel, the Communications Department. Before that she worked at PMI Mortgage Insurance Company as a Sales Assistant to the Area Sales Director for the Pacific Northwest.

Michael joined the Care Management Institute in February, 2000. During the previous five years, he carried out a range of consulting assignments for Kaiser Permanente while completing his coursework in the Systems Science Ph.D. Program at Portland State University. He has training and professional experience in applied statistics, simulation modeling, decision analysis, and systems theory. His dissertation research focuses on the use of information theory to detect and describe the structural characteristics of large multivariate categorical data sets. Michael earned his BA in Mathematics and MS in Operations Research at the University of California.

Prior to joining the Care Management Institute in 1997, Jodi directed KP Consulting in Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Region, and served as a project consultant for the start-up of The Permanente Federation and The Permanente Company. Jodi previously worked as a consultant for APM, Inc., where she provided clinical and operational expertise to hospitals and other health care clients. She has hospital management and newborn intensive care nursing experience, and received her MBA from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.

Kara joined the Care Management Institute in March 2000. Prior to joining CMI, she studied astrophysics at UC Berkeley, ultimately deciding to relinquish the study of radio astronomy in favor of the intricacies of web development technology. Currently she is a web designer for the Permanente Knowledge Connection (PKC), where she utilizes her troubleshooting abilities to find creative solutions to technological constraints. She holds a BA in astrophysics from the University of California at Berkeley.

Prior to joining the Care Management Institute in 1997, Helen was program director of Mosby Consumer Health, with Kaiser Permanente as one of her clients. This is her second tour of duty with Kaiser, having worked in the Program Offices' Communications department from 1991 to 1996. Before joining Kaiser Permanente she was communications manager in the corporate offices of Catholic Healthcare West, and she also has extensive experience as a print journalist. Helen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Ernie Pyle School of Journalism, Indiana University and Edinburgh University, Scotland.

Prior to joining the Care Management Institute in June of 2000, Cheryl was a clinical specialist physical therapist at Kaiser Permanente in Fremont providing rehabilitation to members with chronic neurologic conditions. Additionally, Cheryl worked a research physical therapist at the VA Rehabilitation Research and Development Center in Palo Alto. During her tenure at Kaiser Permanente in the Northern California region, which began in 1983, Cheryl served as the Manager of the Physical Therapy Department in South San Francisco and as the Project Manager for an Innovations Grant in Redwood City. Cheryl continues to serve as an Associate Clinical Professor for the UCSF/SFSU Graduate Program in Physical Therapy. Cheryl received a BS in physical therapy from Indiana University, a BA in psychology from Purdue University and her MS in neurologic physical therapy from Samuel Merritt College in Oakland.

Tabitha Pousson joined CMI as an adminstrative assistant in January 2001. Prior to that she worked as the Office Manager for a local internet service provider, with a background including various Accounting and Administrative positions. She is a native Californian who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and is also a member of Magical Acts Ritual Theater, a local non-profit theater company. She is an experienced seamstress and avid reader of Science Fiction and Fantasy. She started reading her mother's nursing journals at age seven and still has an interest in reading the odd bits discovered while doing work for CMI team members.

Kendra joined the Care Management Institute in May, 1999. Prior this she worked as a research assistant while completing her doctoral degree program. Her projects included Predictors of Marital Instability, Educational Pathways among African Americans, and Pathways to Adulthood: A Three-Generation Longitudinal Study. Kendra's thesis research, Patients, Doctors, Lawyers - Who's Holding the Knife? Predictors of Cesarean Delivery in the United States, was a multilevel investigation of social, professional and structural predictors of method of delivery. Kendra received her Ph.D. in population dynamics and her M.H.S. in biostatistics from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Leonard Schlessinger, Manager Biomathematical Modeling Unit Len joined CMI in 1999. He came from KP Southern California, where he served for 5 years as Manager of the Biomathematical Unit. Prior to KP, Len served as Assistant Vice President for Applied Physics at Pacific Sierra Research Corporation. His academic background includes faculty member of the Physics Department of the University of Iowa, post-doctoral research associate at the University of Illinois, Ph.D. in theoretical physics from UC Berkeley, and a BS in physics from MIT. His professional interests include the application of the methods and techniques of theoretical physics to medical simulation and medical decision making.

Gerardo joined the Biomathematical unit in February 1999. He comes from the Chemistry Departments of UCLA and the University of Oregon, where he served as a postdoctoral research associate. His academic background includes a PhD in theoretical physical chemistry from the University of Oregon, advancement to Ph.D. candidacy in physical chemistry at Northeastern University, a MS in theoretical physical chemistry from the Institute for Nuclear Science of the University of Mexico, and a BS in chemistry from the University of Mexico. Gerardo's professional interests are the implementation of statistical mechanical techniques and stochastic method of analysis in biomathematics and biophysics.

Matt joined CMI in 1998. He came from KP Northwest, where he served over the past 15 years in various management positions, including Planning, Marketing and Medical Economics. He joined KP in 1981 as a Medical Economist in Program Offices. Prior to KP, Matt served as a policy analyst on the Carter Administration Domestic Policy Staff and in HEW, and as a local health planner in the Bay Area. His academic background includes coursework in the Systems Science PhD Program at Portland State University and a Master's in Public Administration from the Wharton School. His professional interests include decision and systems theory and analysis.

Valerie joined Kaiser Permanente in 1983 as senior secretary to the director of Special Studies. Prior to this she developed and gave courses in British and American Literature at the University of Tehran, and English as a Foreign Language in both Iran and England.

Gladys joined the Care Management Institute (CMI) in March, 2000. Prior to joining CMI, she worked for a Contract Research Organization (CRO) that assisted pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the drug development process (Phase I - Phase IV clinical trials). Gladys has conducted cost-effectiveness analyses and patient-based health-related quality-of-life studies alongside clinical trials. Gladys received her MS in Public Policy Analysis from the University of Rochester.

Prior to joining Program Offices in 1997, Cindy designed and evaluated health education programs in Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Region. In addition, she worked in UC Irvine's Preventive Cardiology Program as a project coordinator. She received her MPH with an emphasis in the behavioral sciences from UCLA, and her MS in nutrition from CSU Northridge.

As CMI's Senior Director for Clinical Integration, Dr. Wallace focuses on developing and implementing content and technology tools to help Kaiser Permanente improve clinical performance. In the Northwest Region, Dr. Wallace has worked in the areas of disease management, measurement of clinical performance, new technologies assessment, and the electronic medical record. He also chairs a committee charged with identifying clinical priorities and with integrating implementation of clinical projects within Kaiser Permanente Northwest. As part of his work with the guidelines program, Dr. Wallace integrates or "embeds" guidelines into the electronic medical record utilized for coordinating care of members.

He received his MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and trained in internal medicine and hematology at the University of Rochester. He is board certified in internal medicine and hematology. Dr. Wallace also has served on the faculty at the Oregon Health Sciences University and pursued clinical and basic research activities. He is a member of the executive committee of the Northwest Marrow Transplant Program.
